A. Raising Achievement in Maths (Primary)

Course Leader: Majid Ishaque

Aimed at: Primary teachers and leaders in Maths

This practical hands on course will aim to develop teachers and support staff with the necessary background knowledge and skills to help children make good progress in Maths.  The three main foci for the day will revolve around:

  • Developing your understanding of assessment in Mathematics.
  • Understanding the nature of misconceptions and barriers to children developing their mathematical knowledge
  • Intervention strategies to support those falling behind

At the end of the course participants will feel refreshed, informed and ready to make changes to their Maths lessons with immediate effect.

Majid Ishaque is an experienced Head Teacher with a strong history of working in the education management industry. Currently leading Noor ul Islam Primary School in London which received an Ofsted grade of ‘Good’ in January 2018, Majid is highly skilled in coaching, developing capacity, educational consulting and classroom management. He has established himself as a strong education professional with an MBA focused on Educational Leadership International from the University of London, Institute of Education (now known as UCL Institute of London), as well as the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH).

 

B. Raising Achievement in Maths (Secondary)

Course Leader: Talal Hussain

Aimed at: Secondary teachers and leaders in Maths

The course will focus on:

  • The role of leadership and management in raising achievement in mathematics through the creation of a mathematical rich school environment where creativity and enjoyment of mathematics is valued;
  • Approaches to developing outstanding mathematical practice in teaching and learning based on sound research and  through targeted teacher observation, feedback and development;
  • Impacting on pupil achievement through focused planning, marking and assessment, and through the use of display and resources.

Talal Hussain is a School Improvement Consultant, Curriculum Director for Ilm2Amal and Head Teacher at Cannon Hill Girls School. He was previously the Head Teacher of an independent Muslim school for boys and Governor of an independent Muslim school for girls as well as an Advisory Teacher for Mathematics in Birmingham. He has spent the last few years working with a number of Muslim schools as a consultant, working on school development and staff training, including at AMS events.

 

C. Raising Achievement in English (Primary)

Course Leader: Sadef Sarwar

Aimed at: Primary teachers and leaders in English

The one day workshop will focus on:

  • Raising achievement in reading
  • Exploring key reading and comprehension skills
  • Providing practical strategies and resources to support classroom practice and embed great literacy provision into teaching
  • Raising achievement in vocabulary
  • Importance of vocabulary for comprehension and exploring strategies for robust vocabulary instruction
  • Raising achievement in writing and SPaG

Sadef Sarwar is an experienced primary school teacher with 18 years mainstream primary teaching. She is also an AHT and within this role leads on Maths, English and the Curriculum across the whole school. This role enables her to keep up-to-date with the latest Government initiatives and updates which are then implemented into whole school practice ensuring that standards and achievements are continuously raised in school. Sadef has been involved with LA writing moderation and leading consortium writing moderations.

 

D. Raising Achievement in English (Secondary)

Course Leader: Tushar Imdad-ul-Haque Bhuiya

Aimed at: Secondary teachers and leaders in English

This highly interactive workshop explores proven ways to raise achievement in English. In particular, we shall focus on:

  • Raising achievement in Reading
  • Raising achievement in Writing
  • Raising achievement in Speaking & Listening
  • Raising achievement in SPAG
  • The crucial role of passion in English teaching

Through an engaging mix of presentation, video, group discussion and thought-provoking activities, participants will leave this training with sound knowledge, innovative ideas and plenty of inspiration to take their teaching of English to outstanding levels.

Tushar Bhuiya is the director and lead instructor for Sheikhspeare Services which provides training for schools and specialises in English tuition. A founding director of Manara Academy, Leicester, Tushar’s management role focuses on teacher observations and CPD. One of the few qualified Muslim English teachers in the UK, he has worked for primary and secondary Muslim schools in Leicester since 2006, serving in roles as varied as assistant head, staff governor and exams officer. A unique aspect of Tushar’s training is that he co-delivers with his wife, Saira Hanif – also an experienced, qualified teacher. Saira received the AMS Primary Teacher of the Year Award in 2011.

 

E. Data Analysis for Senior Leaders

Course Leader: Shafique Fazal

Aimed at: Primary and Secondary senior leaders and data co-ordinators

Data Training: Morning session

  • Implement and embed sustainable best practice in light of the introduction of the new accountability measures
  • Develop your assessment systems, and improve your self-evaluation so that you have a clear understanding of your school’s strengths and areas for development
  • Process of data collection and analysis accurately informs and influences school improvement
  • Reviewing school performance against national expectations
  • Evaluating data to data to inform intervention

Using Digital Technologies: Afternoon session

  • Flipped Learning:  The flipped classroom, students do the basic learning prior to working with the teacher and then cover the applied learning and any problems in class. This means there is less passive learning in class and more active and personalised learning
  • Review range of online learning resources: opportunity to collaborate with other learners
  • Successful IT systems to communication, learning and organisation
  • CPD Resources

Shafique Fazal is a very experienced Deputy Head Teacher  working in mainstream schools and more recently in a Muslim school. He was instrumental in leading  Al Aqsa School  to a successful Ofsted. He keys area of  expertise include  raising achievement, curriculum and quality assurance processes. He has worked with a number of schools on a consultancy basis to lead on rapid improvements to address issues of learning and teaching, leadership and Ofsted to successful outcomes. He works closely with Capita SIMS to develop products and delvet traning an national conferences. He is a passionate and skilled user of digital technologies to  support communication, learning and teaching and organsation. He is totally committed to working in collaboration with other schools.

Course Leader: Sajjid Sarwar

Aimed at: Primary and Secondary class teachers

Mohammad Sajjid Sarwar is the former head of a maintained junior school in Birmingham, having been in the role for 3 years. He developed and implemented new data systems within the school as well as consulting Muslim schools on life without levels. Previously, Sajjid was the in the secondary sector for 15 years, including roles such as head of department head and deputy headteacher of a state-funded Muslim school. He has delivered a whole host of workshops for AMS on coaching, staff development and management.

 

G. How to Prepare for a Successful Ofsted

Course Leader: Shanaz Khan

Aimed at: Primary and Secondary teachers and leaders

Practical strategies, tick lists and much, much more to help lead your school to Ofsted success.

Objectives

  • What must you do now to prepare for a successful Ofsted?
  • What can you do during Ofsted?
  • What should you do after Ofsted?

Shanaz Khan is an experienced and successful Head Teacher with over 20 years’ experience working in the State sector as a teacher, senior leader, Head Teacher and school improvement advisor across 74 schools. In addition to this, she has been an Ofsted Inspector for 5 years and has used the skills gained from inspections to lead her current school, Leicester Islamic Academy, to a successful Ofsted in November 2017. She has experience of leading schools in both primary and secondary sectors.

Shanaz believes in the value of education and as a lifelong learner she holds a degree from Birmingham University, a PGCE, a Masters degree in Leadership and Management and the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH).

 

H. TA Training - Supporting Teaching and Learning

Course Leader: Wendy Gregory

Aimed at: Primary and Secondary Teaching Assistants

This one day training workshop will:

  • Explore the relationships between teachers, pupils and TA’s
  • Outline what research tells us is effective/ ineffective in the teacher/TA relationship
  • Reflect on how expectations influence outcomes, including teacher’s expectations of their TAs/TAs expectations of pupils
  • Consider how TAs can be deployed throughout the school and what TAs can do independently

It will also give you practical strategies on the following:

  • How TAs can help with inclusion/ TA’s and statemented children
  • Planning and Preparation
  • TAs during whole class delivery
  • How can you diversify your role? Further suggestions for working in class
  • Questioning techniques and learning-practical tips for TAs
  • Dilemmas

Wendy Gregory is a counselling psychologist, educational consultant, freelance training consultant and writer who has worked with many hundreds of children, young people and their parents. She taught for many years right across the age range before training as a psychologist. More recently, Wendy has run counselling services in several schools, primary and secondary, independent and state and has designed and delivered bespoke CPD programmes for primary schools in Slough. She has appeared on ITV Daybreak discussing various issues that affect children and young people and is a regular guest psychologist on Talk Radio. Wendy has written widely for magazines and national newspapers.

  • All workshops have a limited capacity – once reached, no further bookings can be taken for that workshop. If, on the day, spaces become available due to cancellations, delegates may request to attend this workshop during registration.
  • Member discounts apply to schools who have paid their subscription for AMS membership and have no outstanding payments due. For more information about membership please click here.
  • Organisations who are not eligible for AMS membership (i.e. not a registered full-time day school with an Islamic ethos) can purchase a Service Pack and attend AMS events at member rates as well as enjoy a host of other benefits. Alternatively, you may attend the event as a non-member.

Cancellations:

  • Bookings cancelled 29 days or more before the event date will be refunded in full.
  • Bookings cancelled 15 to 28 days before the event date will be refunded minus a £10.00 charge per ticket to cover administration costs.
  • Bookings cancelled 8 to 14 days before the event date be refunded minus a £20.00 charge per ticket to cover administration costs.
  • Bookings cancelled 7 days or less before the event date will not be refunded.
  • In the event workshops are cancelled, AMS will refund the full amount.
