Designated Safeguarding Lead Training

Course Leader: Matt Sparling (MJS Safeguarding)

Midlands DSL Full Training 24.04.2018

By law, all schools and education settings must have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). DSLs must have specific training every two years.

This one-day training is aimed at DSLs who do not have the current certification or a certification which has expired (expiration is two years from certification date).

AMS is also running the DSL update training for those who already have certification but which is due to expire. The update training is a half-day course taking place on Monday 30 April in Birmingham. Please click here for details.

The full day training will cover:

  • The roles and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, including Ofsted expectations
  • Early help
  • Child protection process
  • Information sharing
  • Serious case reviews
  • Specific areas of concern.

Although your local authority may have a preferred provider of DSL training, it is down to the head teacher/principal and the governing body/trustees to identify an alternative training provider. Ofsted will wish to identify that DSLs are “suitably trained”. A significant number of schools who have been DSL trained by MJS Safeguarding have had Good or Outstanding Ofsted inspections in the last 12 months. Testimony can be provided if needed.

Matt Sparling is the founder and director of MJS Safeguarding Ltd, providing bespoke training and support for practitioners in the children’s workforce particularly school staff. He is also the Chair of Governors at an Outstanding primary school in the Midlands and has over 20 years work experience in the education and public sector, offering exceptional knowledge in the safeguarding arena.
