Press Release: Dispatches – ‘Faith Schools Undercover: No Clapping in Class’

Jul 15, 2014 by

The Association of Muslim Schools believes the Channel 4 Dispatches programme aired on Monday 14th July 2014 entitled ‘Faith Schools Undercover: No Clapping in Class’ is little more than desperate lurid tabloid journalism. The Association also believes it is highly irresponsible of Channel 4 to fan the flames of anti-Muslim sentiment and social conflict in this way. The programme betrayed the standing of Tauheedul Educational Trust, a well respected organisation, whose schools are rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and are seen as a beacon for faith schools around the country.

We echo the sentiments of Blackburn MP Jack Straw, in our belief that Tauheedul Educational Trust “run a very good group of schools” and that they have been unfairly targeted in this sensationalist manner, which has sought to take privately held views and conversations from individuals and wrongly conflate them with school teaching practices and policy. The Association praises Tauheedul in demonstrating good practice by contacting the Department for Education as soon as they discovered the allegations made against them and for promising “to act if anything that emerges on the film is shown to undermine our progressive vision, ethos and approach”.

The Association of Muslim Schools UK is the UK’s Muslim schools umbrella body with over 100 affiliated schools.
