What we do

AMS represents the interests of Muslim schools, Muslim children and young people with the Department for Education and other government departments and bodies ensuring that their voices are heard during policy development and when decisions are made.

AMS Advocacy is about lobbying to:

  • Improve the quality of Muslim education in the UK
  • Promote the growth and development of Muslim schools in the UK
  • Ensure the UK education system better meets the needs of muslim children and helps them achieve good educational outcomes

Previous achievements includes:

  • Delivery of the 30th Anniversary Dinner which brought together 300 stakeholders and guests to celebrate 30 years of AMS
  • Engagement with DfE and Home Office resulting in the Faith Protective Security Funding Scheme being extended to cover Muslim Schools as well as mosques.
  • Early involvement in the policy development work at DfE, which include lobby the establishment of new Muslim/Faith multi academy trusts (MATs) and review of RSE guidance.
  • Attendance by DfE at a Muslim VA Schools Conference to discuss the Schools White Paper and the SEND Green Paper, published in March 2022.
  • Intervening in specific cases from requesting DfE to reconsider its proposed decisions to close Muslim independent schools and or supporting the prompt opening of new ones.

Current work includes

  • Continuing to grow and develop a good working relationship with the DfE and other government departments and bodies
  • Lobbying DfE and Ministers around the creation of a Faith-Based MAT, working in collaboration with Muslim VA schools 
  • Lobbying the Labour Party to amend it’s policy idea of removing VAT exemption from private & independent schools 
  • Providing further support for Muslim schools on RSE by developing a new balanced and inclusive RSE Curriculum for all schools
